BDR meaning: what a business development representative does

Quick answer

The BDR meaning in sales is business development representative. A BDR opens new business: they reach out to target accounts first and book meetings for account executives (AEs), who close the deals. Many companies use BDR and SDR (sales development representative) for the same job. Where they differ, BDRs contact accounts that have not engaged with you yet (outbound), and SDRs answer leads who came to you (inbound).

A pane of a BDR's week: rows of target accounts, email, call and LinkedIn touches in each row, and one qualified meeting with a status dot.

BDR meaning: what does BDR stand for in sales?

BDR stands for business development representative, or business development rep. HubSpot defines a BDR as a salesperson who finds new business. They research potential clients, reach out first and qualify leads before passing them to account executives.

BDRs work the top of the sales funnel, with people who have not engaged with your company yet. Their job is to fill the pipeline, the open deals a sales team works, so account executives can focus on closing.

BDR vs SDR: what is the difference?

The difference is where the work starts. In teams that split the roles, BDRs work outbound: they pick target accounts, often in chosen industries or regions, and reach out cold. SDRs work inbound: website inquiries, content downloads and leads from marketing.

Plenty of companies use the two titles for one job. HubSpot says the line between them varies with company size and sales structure, so judge a role by its tasks, not its title.

Where a team splits the roles, this is the usual line between them. Where it doesn't, one rep does both jobs.

What does a BDR do day to day?

Research, outreach and follow-up fill a BDR's week. All three serve one goal: a qualified meeting for an AE. HubSpot lists market research to find target companies, and email and phone campaigns to reach decision makers.

The pace is high. The Bridge Group's 2025 survey found a median of 112 activities a day per sales development rep (it calls them SDRs). That is 44 calls, 41 emails, 19 on LinkedIn and 8 others.

  • Pick accounts: choose companies that fit your ideal customer profile (ICP), the kind of company that buys from you.
  • Research: find the right people and a reason to reach out now, such as new funding.
  • Reach out and follow up: a planned sequence of touches, each an email, a call or a LinkedIn message, until the person answers.
  • Qualify and book: confirm the need and the interest, then book the meeting.
  • Hand off: brief the AE and log your notes in the CRM, the system that tracks contacts and deals.

How is a BDR measured?

Meetings and the pipeline they create count most, with activity as an early signal. HubSpot groups BDR numbers in three layers: activity, quality and pipeline. Salesforce, writing about SDRs, adds that teams who count qualified meetings research more, while teams who count activity call and email more.

For a benchmark, take The Bridge Group's 2025 survey of 351 B2B (business-to-business) companies about their sales development reps. Its median quota is 10 held meetings a month. Pipeline sourced came to $3.78M per rep a year, and only 60% of reps reached quota.

  • Activity: calls, emails and LinkedIn touches. Useful early on, weak as a goal.
  • Meetings booked and held: count the ones that happen, since a no-show creates no deal.
  • Pipeline created: the value of the new deals the AE accepts.
  • Conversion: the share of meetings that become real deals.

When does a B2B team need a BDR?

Hire a BDR when your AEs spend more time finding meetings than closing deals, and your outbound message already works. HubSpot calls this specialization: the BDR gets good at research and outreach, and the AE at negotiation.

Where teams have sales development reps, The Bridge Group found about one for every 2.4 AEs. Still, a BDR is rarely the right first sales hire: until someone has closed deals, there is no proven message to repeat. HubSpot says an inside sales rep, who both prospects and closes, is ideal for short sales cycles and transactional products.

How do BDRs find accounts and contacts to work?

BDRs start from a list of target accounts, then add the right people and their contact data. Here is that week in OXYGEN, selling to sales leaders at US software companies with 50 to 500 employees.

From account list to handoff in OXYGEN: build the account list, add the people, find emails, reach out, work the replies, hand off.
Six steps from a list of target accounts to a meeting handed to the AE, in OXYGEN.

A free workspace starts with 250 credits, OXYGEN's usage currency. Sending needs a paid plan, from $49 a month, plus $34 a month per LinkedIn account.

  • Build the account list: Company Search filters companies by industry, headcount and country, with a free preview. The full search runs only once you approve its quoted credits, which cap the spend.
  • Add the people: "Find decision makers at companies" finds them by job level and function. After a free sample, it costs 1 credit per company per page of 50 people.
  • Find emails: a Work email column tries data providers in turn and bills only when one finds an address. Checking each address first can cost credits too.
  • Reach out: one sequence mixes email, LinkedIn and call tasks (calls are in beta). Nothing sends until you start it.
  • Work the replies: a reply stops that lead on every channel and lands in one inbox, Unibox.
  • Hand off: add the deal to the CRM's Pipeline board, make the AE its owner and note the meeting.

What mistakes do teams make with BDRs?

Most come down to too few accounts, weak messages or the wrong scoreboard.

  • Too few accounts: without a steady list of accounts that fit, a BDR spends the week building one, or emails the same people again.
  • Generic messages: one template sent to a big list gets ignored or reported as spam. Google asks senders to keep spam reports under 0.1% and never reach 0.3%.
  • Counting activity instead of pipeline: 100 calls mean little if no meetings happen. Reward meetings held and new deals.
  • No handoff rule: agree with your AEs what makes a meeting qualified and who owns the account next. Otherwise meetings stall and leads get two emails.

Related terms: SDR, AE, ICP, prospecting and cold calling

These terms come up most around the BDR role.

  • SDR (sales development representative): a rep who qualifies leads, often inbound, and books meetings; at many companies, another name for BDR.
  • AE (account executive): the salesperson who runs the sale and closes the deal.
  • ICP (ideal customer profile): the kind of company most likely to buy, used to pick target accounts.
  • Prospecting: finding potential buyers and starting a conversation with them.
  • Cold calling: calling someone who has not been in touch with you before.

What OXYGEN does not do here

  • No contact database of its own: account and contact data comes from data providers, on credits, and some people have no email to find.
  • Calls are in beta: a call task puts the lead in a queue, and a person dials from the web softphone, a phone in the browser.
  • It does not hold the conversations: your BDR answers the replies, takes the calls and runs the meetings. You start each sequence and set its limits, and every send is recorded.

Frequently asked questions

What is a BDR, and what does BDR stand for?

A BDR, short for business development representative, is a salesperson who finds new business by reaching out to target accounts first. BDRs book meetings for account executives, who close the deals.

Is a BDR the same as an SDR?

In many companies, yes: the two titles name the same job. When a team splits them, BDRs contact accounts that have not engaged with you yet (outbound), and SDRs qualify leads who came to you (inbound).

What does a BDR do?

A BDR picks target accounts, finds the right people and reaches them by email, phone and LinkedIn. They follow up, qualify the interest, book a meeting and brief the account executive.

Is BDR an entry-level job?

Usually, yes. Salesforce, writing about SDRs, says the role has long been seen as entry level, though it needs a specialized skill set. HubSpot suggests a path to senior BDR or account executive within 18 to 24 months of consistent performance.

What is the difference between a BDR and an account executive?

A BDR opens the conversation and an account executive (AE) closes the deal. The BDR finds and qualifies the lead and books the first meeting. The AE runs the sale from there, through negotiation.

How many meetings should a BDR book a month?

The Bridge Group's 2025 survey of 351 B2B companies found a median quota of 10 held meetings a month. Its figures are for sales development reps, which it calls SDRs. Count meetings that happen, and set your own target from your data.

Will AI replace BDRs?

AI already takes much of the research and first drafts; people own the conversations. An AI BDR, also sold as an AI SDR, is software that researches accounts and writes or sends outreach. Salesforce says AI can't do an SDR's job, but it can draft emails for a rep to review.
